Fire Alarm Installation — common questions
Most non-domestic premises need some form of fire detection and warning. Your fire risk assessment determines what is appropriate, from a simple manual call point in a very small building through to a full automatic system. BS 5839-1 sets out the categories.
BS 5839-1 recommends servicing by a competent person at least every six months. In between, you should test a different manual call point each week and record it in the system log book.
M is manual only, using call points and sounders. L systems add automatic detection: L1 covers the whole building, L2 covers escape routes plus specified higher risk rooms, and L3 covers escape routes and the rooms opening onto them. Your fire risk assessment sets the category.
Cost follows the size of the building and the category of system. Ask two or three of the companies above to quote from the same specification, and compare the annual service contract as well as the installation price.
