Every employer must have access to competent health and safety advice under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999. That competent person can be in-house, but many small and medium businesses appoint an external consultant because it costs less than employing a specialist.
Typical work includes risk assessments, policies and safe systems of work, audits and inspections, staff training, accident investigation and acting as your retained competent person. Most consultants listed here offer both one-off projects and retained support.
