How to Build the Ultimate Profile

The complete guide

How to build the ultimate profile

Every field, what it’s for, and what a buyer is actually looking at when they land on you. A profile filled in properly gets found. A half-finished one just sits there.

Start with the problem you solve, not who you are

Almost every consultant opens their company overview the same way: “we’re a caring, professional safety consultancy.” Every competitor on this directory writes some version of that sentence. It tells a buyer nothing.

The profiles that get picked don’t describe themselves, they describe their client. Who do you actually work with? What’s the specific problem they come to you with? What do you do about it?

Common approach
Greenfield Safety Services

“We are a caring, professional safety consultancy dedicated to excellence and client satisfaction across all sectors.”

Generic. Could be any of a hundred listings. Says nothing about who it’s for.

What stands out
Thornbury Fire & Safety Consultants

“We keep multi-site care providers audit-ready without a full-time SHEQ manager. Fire risk assessments, staff training and compliance documentation, handled end to end.”

Names the client, the problem, and the fix. A buyer knows in five seconds if it’s them.

There’s no cap on the overview, so use the space. If you’re a fire risk assessor, is your ideal client a landlord managing HMOs, a facilities manager at a hospital trust, a construction site agent? Name it.

Categories and services: what free gets you, and what Featured changes

A free listing gets you one service and a 25 mile radius. If you’re a fire risk assessor who also does health and safety audits, a free listing only shows you for one of those, not both.

Shown only where you’ve explicitly listed yourself.

A Featured consultant two counties over can appear in a search you don’t, even if you’re closer, simply because they’re Featured and you’re not.

Everything else that makes a profile complete

1

Your logo

A listing with no logo reads as abandoned, even if everything else is filled in. Upload one, it’s the fastest way to make a profile look real.

2

Images and a strapline

Add photos if you have them, site visits, your team, anything that isn’t a stock image. A short strapline gives a buyer the one-line version before they’ve read anything else.

3

Set your home county first

Your home county is the county you get listed under by default, so make sure it’s the one you actually work out of, not somewhere you’d occasionally travel to.

4

Your address

This is what puts you on the map search. Some buyers search that way specifically, they want somebody close, not somebody who has to travel half the country.

5

Check your contact details properly

You’d be surprised how many listings have a website that 404s, a phone number that doesn’t ring, or an email that bounces. Click through every one right now. We track views, website clicks and email reveals, so if those numbers look low, this is often why.

6

The “uncover” button

When a buyer wants to contact you, they click a button to reveal your email rather than seeing it in plain text. You’ll be notified when someone does this, a clear signal a specific business is interested.

7

Verification and insurance

We’re working on adding a proper insurance verification step to profiles. Insurance requirements in this industry have changed a lot in recent years and buyers increasingly want proof before they engage a consultant. More on this soon.

8

Qualifications and professional memberships

This is for you as an individual: your qualifications and the professional bodies you’re registered with, like IOSH or IFSM. Running a team? List example qualifications your team holds, or your minimum requirements for anyone who joins.

9

Company accreditations

A different thing entirely: accreditations your company holds, not you personally. Things like ISO 45001, BAFE SP205, CHAS. Buyers check for both memberships and accreditations, and they’re checking for different things, so don’t merge them into one vague section.

10

Social media

Add every platform you’re actually active on. Multiple links are fine, there’s no limit.
