How Much Does a Health & Safety Consultant Cost in 2026? (And Do You Legally Need One?)

Whether you’re a growing SME or a sole trader who’s just taken on staff, two questions come up together. Do I actually need a health and safety consultant, and what will it cost? This guide answers both with real 2026 UK figures, so you can decide between hiring a consultant, appointing someone in-house, or handling it yourself.

Do I legally need a health and safety consultant?

Not specifically a consultant, but you do legally need competent health and safety advice. Under Regulation 7 of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, every employer must appoint one or more competent persons to help them meet their duties. That competent person can be you, a director, an employee, or an external consultant. The law expects you to look to your own business first and only bring in outside help where nobody internally has the competence to do what is needed. Our guide to the competent person rule explains this in full.

In practice, most small and medium businesses use an external consultant because employing a full-time specialist is far more expensive than they need. If you have five or more employees you also need a written health and safety policy, something a consultant will produce as a matter of course.

How much does a health and safety consultant cost in 2026?

There are two ways to buy: one-off project work, or ongoing retained support. Typical UK ranges (excluding VAT):

What you’re buyingTypical 2026 cost
Day rate£300–£900/day (specialist or London-based work can run higher)
Hourly rate£70–£120/hour
Health & safety policy£350–£650
General risk assessment (low-risk office)from £300
Single-site H&S audit£600–£1,200
Retained support, small business or sole trader£75–£150/month
Retained support, comprehensive package£400–£1,000/month

For context, a mid-risk business of around 50 employees typically spends £1,000 to £1,500 a month on comprehensive retained support (roughly £12,000 to £18,000 a year), against a true annual cost of £63,000 to £75,000 to employ a mid-level health and safety manager in-house once National Insurance, pension and holiday are included. That gap is exactly why outsourcing is the norm for SMEs.

How much does a health and safety audit cost?

A single-site health and safety audit usually costs £600 to £1,200 plus VAT. The price depends on the size of the site, how many activities it covers and how much paperwork there is to review. You should get a written report with findings ranked by risk and a clear action list. On our Growing plan (£399 a month, 16 to 50 staff) a full audit is included alongside the yearly on-site fire risk assessment.

How much does a risk assessment cost?

A general risk assessment for a low-risk office starts from about £300. Higher-risk work, such as manufacturing, construction or anything involving hazardous substances, costs more because it takes longer on site. If you need several, a retainer is usually cheaper than paying for each one: our Small Business plan (£199 a month, 6 to 15 staff) includes up to 10 risk assessments. New to them? Read what a risk assessment is.

Retained vs one-off, which is right for you?

  • One-off project suits a specific need: a policy, a batch of risk assessments, an audit before a tender or a client requirement.
  • Retained support suits businesses that want an ongoing “competent person” on call: regular reviews, document updates, someone to phone when an issue or an accident happens, and cover if the HSE comes knocking.

How to choose a good health and safety consultant

Qualifications and memberships are useful markers, but the real test is relevant, demonstrable experience of risks like yours. Look for:

  • Relevant qualifications. There is a wide range, from the NEBOSH General Certificate through to the NEBOSH Diploma and NVQ Level 6, plus specialist certificates in the areas that matter to you (fire, construction, occupational health, environmental). Match the qualification to the work, rather than treating any single one as a gold standard.
  • Professional membership. Membership of a recognised body is a good sign of ongoing competence and a code of conduct. The two main ones are IOSH (the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health) and the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM). Chartered membership (CMIOSH) is a well-known marker, but treat it as one indicator among several, not a qualification in itself.
  • Registers. On My Safety Consultant, consultants who appear on recognised registers carry a verified chip on their profile, so you can see their standing at a glance.
  • Sector fit. Construction, manufacturing and healthcare all have specific demands. Match the consultant to your industry.
  • Clear scope. A good consultant tells you what you do and don’t need, rather than selling you the maximum package.

Need this sorted? We give you a competent person, a site visit and your paperwork on a fixed monthly plan, on a 12-month contract rather than 5 years.
