Passive Fire Protection — common questions
The built in parts of a building that contain fire and smoke: fire doors, compartment walls and floors, cavity barriers, fire stopping around services, structural fire protection and intumescent coatings. Unlike alarms and sprinklers it needs nothing to trigger it.
If your building has been altered, recabled or had services installed since it was built, unsealed penetrations through compartment walls are very common. They are one of the most frequent findings in fire risk assessments.
Look for third party certification such as FIRAS, IFC Certification or BM TRADA, and ask for photographic evidence and a certificate covering every penetration that is sealed.
It is normally priced per penetration or per day plus materials, so the survey comes first. Ask two or three of the contractors above to price from the same survey so the quotes are comparable.
