PAT Testing — common questions
The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require electrical equipment to be maintained so that it does not cause danger. They do not mandate testing or set an interval. Combined inspection and testing is simply the usual way of showing you have met the duty.
It depends on the equipment and the environment. Handheld equipment on a construction site may need checking every three months, while a desktop computer in an office may need testing only every few years. HSE guidance INDG236 suggests intervals.
A competent person with suitable training and the right instrument. There is no legally required qualification, but City and Guilds 2377 is the common one.
It is usually priced per appliance with a minimum charge, so the unit price falls as the number of items rises. Give the companies above your appliance count when asking for a quote.
